Creative Lighting is an interesting type of photography, as it is simply reflective on the positioning of light and what it brings out of the image or photo. However, such lighting can easily be manipulated in photoshop to allow for different aspects of the photo to be captured. For instance, Reuben Wu is a perfect example of a photographer who uses creative lighting in a unique mannerism. Wu uses his drone and lights to capture landscapes at a different angle. A technique he uses is capturing the landscapes at night where he can control the lighting and which areas should be emphasized. Overall, creative lighting is interesting, as each photographer is able to portray images in his or her own way.
Juxtaposition is the placement of two ideas (or objects) that contradict one another in order to contrast and compare the two. Juxtaposition is rather interesting as many are able to conquer big, important ideas and capture the two within the same photo. However, juxtaposition is able to open the eyes of others to show case controversial, pressing matters within todays society. Within juxtaposition, there isn't really a correct mannerism to take the photos. As long as there are two contrasting/contradiction ideas included within the photo, juxtaposition will be reflected. Many artists chose to show this through shadows, reflections and even through bright colors. For instance, Erwitt uses juxtaposition within this photo through the cracked window acting as a the child's eye. This photo uses juxtaposition through the contrasting appearance of the young boy's eye.
Still life is an interesting genre of photography, as it pertains more so to the objects and lighting of the photo- not the skill of the photographer. In other words, much of still life photography consists of the gathering of objects and the way the lighting emphasizes the subject of the photo. A brilliant still life photographer, Shihya Kowatari, uses natural lighting in her photos and vibrant colors to emphasize the subject of her photos. For instance, Kowatari uses different colored lights in many of her photos to capture unique details.
In order for still life photos to be taken efficiently, it is necessary to have a camera, plain background (without distractions), reflectors (to bounce light back to the subject), and any type of object to photograph as the subject of the photo. Lighting is very important in still life photography, as it has a direct impact on the quality and mood of the photo. |
